Elaborate Weaving
by Unice Yoo
During ancient times, weaving was a necessity rather than artistic and aesthetic forms. The earliest rugs were woven from organic fibers, so not many survive to the present. Wool was the most common material used to weave fabrics before the introduction of linen, cotton, and silk. The quality of the weaving was nearly as fine as the woven linens today. Not only was the weaving very fine, but textiles were also dyed and adorned with appliqués, embroidery, and beads. Both cotton and silk were discovered a long time before they were introduced to the rest of the world. The Egyptian civilization and the Indus river valley civilizations grew cotton; the Chinese manufactured silk.
